Asher had no idea where he was, or where he was going. He floated along aimlessly, unsure of his purpose or whether he was truly alive. There was no telling how long he spent there, vacillating without making any choices, stranded in the nothingness.

“Boy, wake up! Wake up, I say!” Núada said, shaking him like a rag doll.

“Hands off the merchandise,” Asher said, dismayed when his already strained clothes were torn by the rough handling.

“Explain yourself! Have you come from the Fall Court?” Núada said, and it was like Asher was speaking to a completely different person.

“That’s right,” Asher said wearily. “I was sent in search of the Four Treasures, and here I am,” Asher said; he grinned weakly and threw up his hands.

“Splendid. Then you should return from whence you came,” Núada said, then pulled him to his feet and started pushing him towards an exit.

Asher pushed back, grinding himself to a stop. “Now hold on! Wait a minute. I just got here; I’m not about to run back with my tail between my legs and with nothing to show for it.”

Núada shook his head forlornly. “Not so. You were lost to the void.”

Asher’s eyes tried to leap from their sockets. “How long have I been here? TELL ME!” Asher said, and he squeezed the First King’s wrist threateningly.

Núada forced Asher to release him. “This refuge was created from the bones of the greatest, most powerful giant, Balor. Measurements of any kind are warped here, especially those easily twisted by perception, like time.”

Asher felt a pit form in his stomach. He rubbed his face and tried to calm down.

“My efforts have only been enough to keep the plague from affecting Tír na nÓg further, but there is a way to restore the Wastes to what they once were,” Núada said.

His panicking mind calmed at the news. “What’d ya mean? If you had a solution to the problem the whole time, what’s kept you from following through on it?”

“Were such a feat possible, yes, I would have done so already. Unfortunately, I would not last one minute outside. Even after his death, Balor exacts his revenge by confining me here with no hope of righting my wrongs. For an immortal, however—that is another story.”

What the fuck? I might as well be wearing a sign that says: ‘Suckers, I can’t die!’

“On my honor, I bear you no ill will. Without any malicious intent, I implore you to return to Falias—in the name of Núada Airgetlám, the First King of Tír na nÓg. You seek a Treasure? Then here, take this one,” Núada said, and handed Claideb Solais to Asher.

Asher gaped at being given the object of his search without even having to ask, without even having to beg or roll over for it. He had to do a double-take as he clutched the relic to his chest and made sure he wasn’t hallucinating the whole thing. The last, most impossible task of all, and the King of kings had handed it to him on a silver platter.
